Electricity Tariff: Nigerians Paying For Darkness – Reps

The Deputy Minority of the House of Representatives, Toby Okechukwu has raised the alarm on the recently announced increment in electricity tariffs.

Mr. Okechukwu while speaking to THISDAY queried the basis for the increment which resulted in the Enugu zone being charged more than Lagos. He said that the House through its committee on Power will interrogate the increment.

Nigerians Kick As UBA Sacks 2000 Workers In January

Nigerians have reacted angrily as the United Bank for Africa, allegedly sacked a large number of its staff numbering about two thousand.

The workers were sacked at the beginning of January 2020. Although the banking institution has not come with a reason for its action, an insider said the old staff were relieved of the duty to accommodate new ones.

Police Speaks On Kidnap Of 40 Nigerians In Katsina

The Katsina State Police Command on Monday denied reports making rounds online that about 40 persons were kidnapped by bandits along Jibia – Batsari road on Sunday.

The Command Spokesman, Superintendent Gambo Isa, in a statement, described the news as a ’’ mere rumour’’ and urged the public to disregard such information.

It was reported that bandits numbering over sixty, armed with AK 47 rifles on Friday blocked the Jibia – Batsari road in Ruma village, Katsina State.

Nigerians’ Incomes Will Shrink In 2020 – Rewane

The disposable incomes of Nigerian consumers will be squeezed by the proposed increase of Value Added Tax and electricity tariff this year, an economic and financial expert, Mr. Bismarck Rewane, has said.

Rewane, who is the Managing Director /Chief Executive Officer of Financial Derivatives Company Limited, said the VAT hike (from five percent to 7. 5 percent) would lead to higher commodity prices.
He said other challenges would include low income per capita ( currently at $2, 236), high-income inequality and rising poverty rate in the country.

A Clinical Dietitian, Mr Moses Okolie, on Tuesday, warned the public against the consumption of non-iodised salt to prevent goitre and other throat diseases prevalent in the country.

Okolie, who works in the Chukwemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka that the consumption of non-iodised salt was dangerous to human health.

NERC: Why Some Nigerians Don’t Pay Electricity Bills

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has given reasons why some Nigerians don’t pay the 11 electricity distribution companies (Discos) for power supplied to them.

The NERC, in its latest quarterly review of the sector’s activities for the second quarter of 2019, stated that the Discos have largely failed to provide meters to their customers which would have enabled them to account for their electricity consumption patterns.

“The metering gap for end-use customers is still a key challenge in the industry. The records of the commission indicate that, of the 8,881,443 registered electricity customers, only 3,811,729 (42.92 per cent) …
