Nepal — In a moment that underscored both the fragility of Nepal’s politics and the inventiveness of its younger generation, thousands of young protesters turned to the online platform Discord this week to choose the country’s next leader.

The unconventional process came after days of deadly unrest that toppled Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s government, which had faced mounting accusations of corruption, nepotism and a violent crackdown that left at least 72 people dead. No fewer than 50 people in Nepal and India in recent days have died following a heavy monsoon rains and landslides have killed almost, authorities shave confirmed. 

In western Nepal at least 22 people died after landslides buried more than 100 houses on Friday, police official Narayan Dangi told reporters.

Eleven people were injured, including three airlifted to hospital by army helicopter.

Pandemic Shuts Down Everest As Nepal Suspends All Permits

Nepal on Friday barred climbers from all mountains — including Everest — over the coronavirus pandemic, in a major blow to its tourism industry.

The Himalayan country, which has so far confirmed one coronavirus case, earns 4.4 million dollars a year from climbing permits while the losses to expedition organisers will be even higher.

As well as suspending all climbing permits, Nepal stopped issuing tourist visas on arrival, Yogesh Bhattarai, Minister for Culture Tourism and Civil Aviation told AFP.
