In lieu of the recent sanctions on some of the media houses in the country, the Federal High Court in Lagos has given a halting directive to the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) from sanctioning and revoking the licenses of some of the 53 broadcast stations in the country whike shutting down the stations for allegedly failing to renew their licenses.

NBC Slams 96-Hour Ultimatum On 52 Debtor TV, Radio Stations

In lieu of the controversial ban which they had slammed on some some media houses in the country, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has come to issued a 96-hour ultimatum to the debtor media organisations while threatening more sanctions upon them.

They media housed had been given an ultimatum of August 24, 2022, to make sure that they pay and clear all their outstanding debts too.

In a very controversial decision, the Management of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), has slammed a fine of ₦5 million each on Trust TV, Multichoice, and NTA-Startimes who were earlier accused by the government agency of glorifying terrorism.

IPOB interview: NBC Comes Hard On Channels TV

The National Broadcasting Commission’s hammer on Monday fell down very hard on Channels Television by ordering an immediate stoppage of one of its programmes, ‘Politics Today’.

According to the commission, it took the decision following a live interview the station had with the spokesperson for the Indigenous People of Biafra, Emma Powerful which is a proscribed group.

The acting Director-General of NCC, Prof. Armstrong Idachaba, took the decision in a letter to the Managing Director of Channels TV titled, ‘Inciting Comments By Proscribed Group: Politics Today’.

Arise, AIT, Channels Escalated Violence – Buhari Group Claims

The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has lauded the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for sanctioning three broadcast media stations for their coverage of End SARS protests.

A statement on Friday by the Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju and the Secretary, Cassidy Madueke, claimed the organisations breached extant regulatory guidelines.

BMO aligned with NBC’s position that Arise TV, AIT and Channels TV contributed to the escalation of the crisis.

The body noted that the sanction sends a strong and unambiguous message to the broadcast industry in Nigeria.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has condemned the fines imposed on Channels TV, AIT, and Arise TV.

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on Monday said the stations broadcasted online photos and videos of the End SARS protests.

The new National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Code and Memo threatening to sanction any broadcast that denigrates, disrespects, insults, and abuses president, governors, lawmakers, and other elders and leaders in authority, must be withdrawn urgently.

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari today urged him to instruct Mr Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture to do so.

It’s A Lie: I Didn’t Order NBC To Suspend BBNaija – Lai Mohammed

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said he never ordered the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, NBC, to halt the transmission of the ongoing Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality show.

It was reported that Mohammed ordered the NBC to stop the show to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The report has generated sharp criticism on social media over the minister’s alleged comment.

But, Mohammed, in a statement by his media aide, Segun Adeyemi, said that there was no memo to that effect and that the general public should ignore such reports.
