Ukraine Invasion: UK Freezes Putin, Lavrov Assets

The Government of the United Kingdom has ordered that all assets of President Vladimir Putin and his Foreign affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov be frozen over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier in the week.

Africa Daily News, New York gathered that the Treasury on Friday issued a financial sanctions notice against the two men, adding them to a list of Russian oligarchs who have already had their property and bank accounts in the UK frozen.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had earlier informed his NATO partners that he was planning ‘imminent’ sanctions against Putin and Lavrov.

US Dispatches Troop Reinforcements Near Poland-Ukraine Border

Hundreds of US paratroopers landed at a Polish airport near the Ukrainian border yesterday as part of a deployment of several thousand others to bolster NATO’s eastern flank as tensions with Russia continue to build up.

On Thursday morning, a number of soldiers were sighted leaving a Boeing C-17 military transport plane and boarding buses at Rzeszow Airport, located around 100 kilometres (62 miles) from the border with Ukraine.

Another group of soldiers, around a dozen, boarded two Black Hawk helicopters which was also sighted taking off.

Two Chinook helicopters were also seen landing.

NATO Warns Iran To Respect Shipping After Tanker Attack

The NATO alliance has condemned a deadly attack on an Israeli-operated tanker last week and urged Iran to respect international shipping rules.

Separately, the European Union also condemned the ‘unacceptable” attack and ‘any action that would be detrimental to peace and stability in this area’.

The United States, Britain, and Israel say Iran launched the attack on the vessel, MV Mercer Street, off the coast of Oman last week, killing a British security guard and a Romanian crew member.
