Following the outrage among Nigerians, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on Saturday reversed its earlier decision by going on to issue a 96-hour ultimatum to debtor media organisations or face law enforcement agencies.

Africa Daily News, New York reports that the affected media organisations have now been given an ultimatum of August 24, 2022, to pay all outstanding debts.

The Director-General of NBC, Balarabe Ilelah issued a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

Ilelah said the extension followed an appeal by the broadcast stations, stakeholders, public-spirited individuals, and organisations.

Arise, AIT, Channels Escalated Violence – Buhari Group Claims

The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has lauded the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for sanctioning three broadcast media stations for their coverage of End SARS protests.

A statement on Friday by the Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju and the Secretary, Cassidy Madueke, claimed the organisations breached extant regulatory guidelines.

BMO aligned with NBC’s position that Arise TV, AIT and Channels TV contributed to the escalation of the crisis.

The body noted that the sanction sends a strong and unambiguous message to the broadcast industry in Nigeria.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has condemned the fines imposed on Channels TV, AIT, and Arise TV.

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on Monday said the stations broadcasted online photos and videos of the End SARS protests.

The government suggested that their actions fuelled violence across Nigeria.

The new National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Code and Memo threatening to sanction any broadcast that denigrates, disrespects, insults, and abuses president, governors, lawmakers, and other elders and leaders in authority, must be withdrawn urgently.

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari today urged him to instruct Mr Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture to do so.

SERAP also asked President Buhari to “instruct Mr Mohammed and the NBC to immediately rescind the fine of N5m imposed on Nigeria Info 99.3 FM radio station.
