Telecommunications giants MTN, have revealed that its services in Nigeria could be disrupted as a result of rising insecurity in different parts of the country.

Africa Daily News, New York has learnt that MTN Nigeria is the first company to acknowledge a possible disruption to its services due to insecurity in Africa’s most populous nation.

Nigeria faces increased insecurity across the country — ranging from mass abductions at schools, kidnappings for ransom, armed conflict between herdsmen and farmers, armed robberies, and various insurgencies — a drag on growth and job creation.

All is not well yet as talks between MTN Nigeria and its banking partners on how to resolve the dispute over commission for airtime vending on unstructured supplementary service data (USSD) on Friday failed to achieve an amicable settlement.

At the latest meeting, MTN insisted that the streamlining it undertook aligned with global standards and best practices as the scale is built along distribution channels.

MTN Nigeria Profit Shrinks To ₦144.24 Billion

MTN Nigeria’s profit dropped by 3.3 per cent, recording ₦144.24bn profit after tax in the nine-month period ended September 30, the company’s unaudited financial report released on Wednesday has shown.

MTN said its operations were impacted by the devaluation of naira, saying availability of foreign exchange remained a challenge and revealed plans to reduce exposure to foreign currency.

The mobile network operator generated N654.52bn in voice revenue, including interconnect and roaming voice, in the nine-month period, indicating 4.2 per cent growth from the corresponding period in 2019.
