Mozambique Insurgency Will Deepen Food Insecurity – UN

Escalating conflict and deteriorating food security in northern Mozambique, where more than 300,000 people have abandoned their homes and crops, could see “crisis” levels of food insecurity continue into 2021, the World Food Programme warned Tuesday.

“We are deeply concerned about the unfolding humanitarian situation in Cabo Delgado where conflict and violence have left people without access to food and livelihoods,” WFP spokeswoman in Mozambique Antonella D’Aprile said in a statement.

“Latest findings from Famine Early Warning System (FEWSNET) indicate that communities will continue to face crisis levels of food insecurity into early 2021,” the statement said.

Mozambicans Demand Dialogue & ‘Democracy Dividend’

Mozambique has had a troubled history. Portugal gained control of parts of the Indian Ocean coast in the 16th century and ruled, often brutally, until 1975. A 10-year armed struggle by the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) won independence, following the overthrow of Portugal’s dictatorship in that country’s ‘carnation revolution’. Two years later, a 15-year civil war in Mozambique, backed by South Africa’s apartheid regime, killed over a million people and displaced five million. Since October 2017, fragile progress in a long recovery has been threatened by almost-daily scattered armed-group attacks in the north of Cabo Delgado province, where natural gas

“EU observers detected numerous irregularities and malpractice both ahead of election day and during polling, counting and the tabulation of results. Irregularities included the unconcealed inflation of the voter register in Gaza and an under-registration of voters in other provinces, and the restriction of independent monitoring by opposition party agents and established independent national observer groups,” declared the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) in its final report released today (12 Feb).

“EU observers also noted ballot-box stuffing, organised multiple voting, intentional invalidation of votes for the opposition, altering of polling station results with the fraudulent addition of …

Mozambique: Nyusi Ready For Dialogue With Insurgents

Maputo — Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi declared on Monday that he is willing to enter into dialogue with the opponents of the government, but warned “we are also ready to pursue, in all corners of the country, those who have been killing Mozambicans, so that we can hold them responsible for their crimes”.

He was speaking at the Monument to the Mozambican Heroes in Maputo, on the occasion of Heroes’ Day, the 51st anniversary of the assassination of the founder and first president of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), Eduardo Mondlane, on 3 February 1969.

Traffic Nightmares Resume In Cabo Delgado, Mozambique

Maputo — Once again, it is only possible to cross the Montepuez river in Quissanga district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, by boat.

The bridge over the Montepuez collapsed on 27 December, as flood waters swept away the central pillars. This cut off the flow of traffic from the provincial capital, Pemba and the south of the province, to the northern districts of Muidumbe, Mueda, Nangade, Mocimboa da Praia and Palma.

When the level of the Montepuez fell, the government improvised an alternative way of crossing the river, using a metallic bridge and a causeway built on …

Extreme Food Shortage Hits Mozambique

About 3,000 people in Dombe, Central Mozambique, are dealing with extreme food shortages after crops were ruined by Cyclone Idai in March.

Local official, Tomas Razao said that some people were surviving on wild roots and seasonal fruits.

The cyclone followed a period of drought, which created tough weather conditions for crops to grow in.

Any crops that did manage to flourish – like grain and vegetables – were then destroyed by the cyclone.
