FG Registers Two Varsity Unions, Moves To Weaken ASUU

In a bid to weaken the influence of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Federal Government of Nigeria, on Tuesday, registered two unions in the university system.

The unions are the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics and the Congress of Nigerian University Academics.

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige, made this known while speaking during the presention of the certificates of registration to the two unions explained that the two bodies will exist alongside ASUU.

Local government workers in Niger State have refused to forfeit 20 per cent of their March 2020 salaries as decided by the state Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to combat the Coronavirus pandemic.

This is coming after a joint meeting of staff of the Medical and Health Workers Union, the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employers (NULGE), the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Niger state and Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) Niger state.

Austria’s Foreign Ministry Says Facing Serious Cyber Attack

Austria’s foreign ministry is facing a “serious cyber attack”, it said late Saturday, warning another country could be responsible.

“Due to the gravity and nature of the attack, it cannot be excluded that it is a targeted attack by a state actor,” it said in a statement with the interior ministry shortly before 11.00 pm (2200 GMT), adding that the attack was ongoing.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports yesterday warned factional leader of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Ibrahim Shehu Gusau against disobeying the decisions of the board, which suspended him during its December 3, 2019 general meeting in Abuja.

The Institute of Information Management Africa (IIM Africa) has urged the Federal Government (FG) to restructure the Ministry of Information and Culture for effective management of government data.

Albania Earthquake Death Toll Hits 40: Defence Ministry

The death toll from the most powerful earthquake to strike Albania in decades rose to 40 on Thursday, after 10 more bodies were pulled from the rubble overnight, the defence ministry said.

The 6.4 magnitude earthquake rattled the Balkan state before dawn on Tuesday, levelling buildings and trapping bodies underneath the wreckage in towns near the Adriatic coast.

The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, has disclosed the readiness of the Ministry of Finance to assist financially ‘stressed’ Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON), to recover some of the debts owed to its debtors.

2020: Petroleum Ministry Budgets ₦42M For Sewage Disposal

Ministry of Petroleum Resources has budgeted a sum of ₦42,980,935 for disposal of sewage in the 2020 appropriation bill. The ministry also budgeted ₦104 million for local travel, transport and training.

The outgoing Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN, said the Ministry of Justice has recovered 779.5 million dollars and N59.2 billion stolen from the country.
