Mexico Ex-Defense Chief Held In US On Drug Allegations

A former Mexican defense minister has been arrested in the United States on suspicion of links with drug cartels, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Friday, lambasting the country’s old “mafia government.”

Salvador Cienfuegos, who was defense chief from 2012 to 2018, is reported to have been on a trip with his family when he was detained at Los Angeles airport on Thursday.

Lopez Obrador said the general was “accused of links with drug trafficking,” adding that the US authorities were expected to give more details later Friday.

Mexicans Place Ban On Americans Crossing The Border

Mexican protesters have shut a US southern border crossing amid fears that untested American travellers will spread coronavirus.

Residents in Sonora, south of the US state of Arizona, have promised to block traffic into Mexico for a second day after closing a checkpoint for hours on Wednesday.

Again, Trump threatens to close Mexican border

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday again threatened to close part of the Southern border and send more “armed soldiers” to defend it if Mexico did not block a new caravan of migrants traveling toward the U.S.

“A very big Caravan of more than 20,000 people started up through Mexico,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

“It has been reduced in size by Mexico but is still coming. Mexico must apprehend the remainder or we will be forced to close that section of the Border & call up the Military.”

Trump also said, without offering details, that Mexican soldiers recently had “pulled …
