Russia Designates Meta As ‘Terrorist And Extremist’ Group

Russia on Wednesday included US tech giant Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, to a list of which it has labelled as ‘terrorist and extremist’ organisations, according to a database of the Federal Service for Financial Monitoring (Rosfinmonitoring) which was sighted by Africa Daily News, New York.

Recall that in late March, Russia had announced a ban on Facebook and Instagram for allegedly ‘carrying out extremist activities’ after authorities accused Meta of tolerating what it described as ‘Russophobia’ during Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine.

The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has filed a suit against Meta Platforms Incorporated, owners of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and its agent, AT3 Resources Limited, at the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division.

ARCON is seeking a declaration, among others, that the continued publication and exposure of various advertisements directed at the Nigerian market through Facebook and Instagram platforms by Meta Platforms Incorporated, without ensuring the same is vetted and approved before exposure, is illegal, unlawful, and a violation of the extant advertising law in Nigeria.

Meta on Tuesday asserted that it had derailed a campaign out of China to influence upcoming US elections by appearing as people in the United States taking sides on ‘hot button’ issues.

Russia Sues Meta Over Instagram, Facebook ‘Death Calls’

The Russian Government yesterday disclosed that it has concluded plans to open a criminal case against Meta for ‘calling for the murder’ of Russians, insisting that the parent company of Facebook and Instagram had relaxed rules on violent messages aimed at Russia’s army and leaders.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, which is saddled with the responsibility of investigating major crimes, disclosed that it was launching an investigation ‘due to illegal calls for the murder of Russian nationals by employees of the American company Meta.’
