Social Media Bill: Defiant Senate Ignores Public Outcry

In the days leading to the inauguration of the 9th Senate, stakeholders had raised  concerns about the recruitment process of the presiding officers of the upper legislative chamber.

The concerns were predominantly borne of fears that the active involvement of the presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would produce a rubber stamp leadership that will be subservient to the Executive arm.

Another critical consideration was the concern about the loyalty of the leadership of the Senate – loyalty to the people or to President Muhammadu Buhari. President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, during his campaign, repeatedly made a …

US Urges Social Media Platforms To Block Iran Officials

The US State Department on Saturday called on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to suspend the accounts of Iranian government leaders until Tehran re-establishes internet coverage throughout the riot-torn country.

The government imposed a near-total Internet blackout more than a week ago amid violent protests.

“It is a deeply hypocritical regime,” Brian Hook, special US representative for Iran, said in an interview with Bloomberg posted on the official State Department Twitter account.

“It shuts down the internet while its government continues to use all of these social media accounts.

“So one of the things that we are calling on are social …

Social Media Bill: Short Walk To Totalitarianism?

I have consistently tried to create levels of differentiation between democracy and dictatorship, especially dictatorships of the military variant as we have had in our country. I have argued that Nigeria is still very far away from the goal posts of what could be called a democratic society. In my view, the environment does not as yet look anything democratic because the actors are largely strangers to the ethos and what is more, too many of them are tied to the old order, not to talk of the fact that the presence of General-presidents suggest that we are still in …

Kanu Blasts Media For Portraying Referendum As Call For War

The leader of Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has said that the Nigeria Media portrays any call for referendum as a call for war.

The IPOB leader made this known on Twitter. He said:

As Ethiopia conducts Referendum in its Sidama region, one is reminded of a similar referendum through which Adamawa became part of Nigeria. Today any demand for referendum is deemed call for war. Why? It’s because Nigeria media portrays it as such just to please the ruling Cabal.

Recall that IPOB had requested for a referendum which the Nigeria federal government refused to grant …

Hate Speech, The Broadcast Media And Democratic Freedoms

No doubt there is the need to exercise all possible restraints in the management of information in the broadcast environment.

The radio and television environment in Nigeria which has suddenly become the rallying point for citizens to quickly get information and discuss governance should be a source of concern to any government battling to keep a cohesive, United and secured fragile country like Nigeria.

What manner of necessary media restrictions can be acceptable in a democratic setting?

Should there be a line drawn to make sure that the proposed controls being hatched will not limit the ability of the press …

Lai Mohammed And The Social Media

Lai Mohammed And The Social Media

I was in Maiduguri in 1992 with the current Managing Director of ‘The Nation’ newspaper, Mr Victor Ifijeh, then a political correspondent for Concord Newspapers, to cover the National Assembly election under the ‘guided democracy’ of General Ibrahim Babangida. The battle for the Borno Central Senatorial district was between Hajia Kolo Kingibe, wife of then Social Democratic Party (SDP) National Chairman, Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe and Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff of the National Republican Convention (NRC). In those days, Kingibe used to describe Ifijeh as ‘the campaign manager of M.K.O. Abiola in Borno’ because the latter had visited the state …

Onyeka Urges Young People Monetize Your Abilities

A Nigerian blogger and historian; Chiemelie Onyeka has charged Nigerians never to do what they do very well for free. The social media influencer tried to drive his message home using some of the experiences he gathered from working with people.

He said: “I once had an ‘ex’ who was very dutiful and eccentric about her job with the media but she was always shortchanged as she came in as an intern at the time. She grew in rank and learnt fast yet it didn’t affect her remuneration. She was underpaid, undervalued and underrated to say the least”.

Social media responsible for divorce rate – Counsellor

A Marriage Counsellor, Mrs Adeyemi Omoseye, has attributed the high rate of divorce in Nigeria to imitating the western culture through the social media.

Omoseye said this in Ilorin on Tuesday while speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

She said couples in Nigeria were used to forming their lives after the western culture.
