Malian Parliament Approves 5-Year Democratic Transition Plan

Mali’s lawmakers on Monday announced the approval of a plan that would allow the military junta to rule for up to five years, despite regional sanctions earlier imposed on the country over delayed elections.

Africa Daily News, New York recalls that after staging a coup in the impoverished Sahel state  sometime in August 2020, the country’s military rulers initially promised to stage a vote in February 2022.

But in December last year, the junta proposed staying in power for between six months and five years, citing security concerns.

In response, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) last month …

France To Withdraw Troops From Mali After Decade-Long War

France on Thursday announced that it has commenced the process of withdrawing troops from Mali due to a breakdown in relations with the country’s ruling junta, after nearly a decade of fighting a jihadist insurgency.

Africa Daily News, New York reports that the Mali deployment has been heavily challenged with problems for France — of 53 French soldiers killed serving in West Africa’s Sahel region, 48 of them died in Mali.

ECOWAS Threatens More Sanctions Against Mali Junta

West African leaders have threatened further sanctions against Mali within weeks if the country’s junta makes fails to make ‘concrete progress’ toward holding democratic elections in February as earlier promised.

The latest threat came Sunday after the regional bloc known as ECOWAS held a summit in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, amid mounting concern that Mali’s coup leader is failing to make sufficient election preparations.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, ECOWAS commission president Jean-Claude Kassi Brou explained that the additional sanctions would be put in place starting Jan. 1.

The decision is the latest in a series of moves launched by the regional …

Mali’s Largest Union Launches Fresh Strike

Mali’s largest trade union has launched a fresh strike which has slowed down or paralysed government offices and banks in the unstable West African country.

The move is coming on the heels of a similar strike last week, and comes amid growing frustration with the post-coup government in Mali.

The National Union of Malian Workers (UNTM), which represents public servants and private-sector employees, called a second four-day strike after pay negotiations with Mali’s interim government collapsed over the weekend.

Hamadoun Bah, a union official, told reporters: ‘The government side only came with promises. And even these promises are

Mali’s Transitional Government Nominates New PM

Mali’s transitional president appointed former minister of foreign affairs, Moctar Ouane, on Sunday as the West African nation’s prime minister, days after being sworn into office.

The appointment of a civilian prime minister was a major condition imposed by the West African regional economic bloc, ECOWAS, on Mali to lift sanctions that were imposed after an Aug. 18 coup. ECOWAS had closed borders to Mali and stopped financial flows to put pressure on the junta to quickly return to a civilian government.

West African Bloc Stands By Return To Civilian Rule In Mali

West African countries on Friday demanded an immediate civilian transition in Mali and elections within 12 months as they considered sanctions after rebel troops toppled the country’s president and seized power.

The demands were spelt out after the new junta released ousted president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, seized in the August 18 coup, but also apparently granted their new chief the powers of head of state.

The coup shocked Mali’s West African neighbours and ally France, heightening worries over instability in a country already struggling with an Islamist insurgency, ethnic violence and economic stagnation.

It called for the creation of a “consensus government of national unity.”

The delegation said a decision by the constitutional court in late April was the source of social-political tension in the country.

The court had overturned around 30 results from the elections in March and …

Since then, he has been living in a small tent made of tarp and twigs at a camp for displaced people in Sevare, some 100km (62 miles) from his home in Ballanguine. Instead of going to school, he spends his days sitting around the Chirifila site with his family and other children displaced by the violence that has
