Malaria Has Killed More Nigerians Than Terrorists – PECAN

The Pest Control Association of Nigeria, PECAN, has identified Malaria as a major killer of Nigerians and mankind in the Sub-Saharan region of Africa over the years, saying that the sickness has killed more Nigerians than terrorists.

The Abuja chapter of the association on Saturday claimed that Malaria had killed Nigerians more than Boko Haram, bandits, and any war over the years.

The Chairman of the Abuja chapter of PECAN whose name was given as Terungwa Abari made this disclosure while speaking yesterday during a public awareness campaign programme to mark this year’s World Mosquito Day.

Nigeria, Others To Get Malaria Vaccine By 2022 – AHM

The Assembly of Health Ministers of the ECOWAS region on Friday disclosed that Nigeria and other African countries would get access to the newly developed malaria vaccine by the first quarter of 2022.

Ghanaian Health Minister, who also doubles as the chairman of the assembly, Dr Kweku Agyeman-Manu, disclosed this to journalists at the 22nd ordinary session of the health ministers in Abuja on Friday.

A medical expert, Dr Chinonso Egemba, says Malaria can cause pregnant women to have miscarriages, children with low birth weights, stillbirths, and also make a fetus to stop growing.

Egemba told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, that a pregnant woman could experience such because malaria affects blood flow to the womb.

He spoke on the backdrop of World Malaria Day marked every April 25, which draws global attention to the burden of the disease that threatens half of the world population.

Nigeria Pledges $12M To Global Fund On Malaria, TB, Others

Federal Government has pledged $12 million to Global Fund to strengthen the fight against malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and other communicable diseases.

Spokesperson, National Agency for the Control of Aids (NACA), Toyin Aderibigbe, in statement, yesterday, said the pledge was made at the sixth replenishment conference of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund), held in Lyon, France.

13 States Benefited From Global Fund Malaria Initiative

Thirteen states of the federation, including Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, Taraba, Gombe, Yobe, Adamawa, Ogun, Osun and Delta states are currently benefiting from the health and peace initiative supported by the Global Fund (GF).

The Civil Society is driving the health initiative in Malaria Control, Immunisation and Nutrition (ACOMIN).

ACOMIN said it has so far commenced work on the prevention, treatment and mitigation of the impact of malaria as well as the promotion of immunisation and better nutrition in the 13 states in Nigeria.

The states are also benefiting from peacebuilding initiative of ACOMIN among the warring communities.…

10m Euros for new malaria drug

The European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) has given a grant of €10 million over five years to “WANECAM 2” to conclude production of new malaria drug.

WANECAM 2 is a unique collaboration between antimalarial drug researchers in Africa and Europe from ten academic institutions, a pharmaceutical company, Novartis, and a not-for-profit product development partnership (PDP), Medicines for Malaria Venture.

The grant will support African trials of a novel antimalarial combination comprising KAF156 (ganaplacide) and lumefantrine in a new once-daily formulation.

KAF156 has demonstrated the potential to treat resistant malaria and to be administered as a single dose.…

Why Nigeria cannot eradicate malaria now, by Onu

The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has declared Nigeria can only eradicate malaria completely in the future but not right now.

He said although Nigeria possesses the bio and nuclear technology that can control and eradicate malaria from its boarders, it can only be sustainable when it is eradicated in the continent as a whole.

Onu added that the eradication of malaria in Nigeria will not be sustainable because after Nigeria eradicates the mosquito vectors, new ones will simply fly in from border countries.
