Defection Looms As Imo Assembly Resumes Today

The lawmakers at the Imo State House of Assembly will on Tuesday (today) resume from their one month Christmas and New Year break.

The lawmakers had, on December 24, adjourned till January 21 after passing into law the 2020 budget estimate presented by Emeka Ihedioha, who has now been sacked by the Supreme Court as the governor of the state.

As the lawmakers resume today, there are strong indications that majority of the lawmakers will defect to the All Progressives Congress.

Olympic Doping Ban Looms For Russia After WADA Panel Ruling

The prospect of Russia being banned from next year’s Tokyo Olympics moved a step closer as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) recommended the country’s drug-testing authority be declared non-compliant, with charges racking up against Russia and the clock ticking ahead of next July’s Games.

WADA said in Canada overnight Friday its Compliance Review Committee (CRC) recommended the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) be suspended again when the global watchdog meets in Paris on December 9.

If WADA chiefs adopt the recommendation, Russia faces severe sanctions including a possible ban from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

2020 Budget: Showdown Looms In House Of Reps

A showdown is dangling over the House of Representatives following alleged allotment of constituency projects to principal officers  in the 2020 budget besides their share of votes allocated for projects in the Zonal Intervention Projects (ZIP).  

A member of the House, who declined to be named told Daily Sun that aside projects due to principal officers from ZIP, “they already have a number of projects included for them in the budget” before President Muhammadu Buhari presented estimates to a joint session of the National Assembly on October 8.

Danger Looms; Nigeria’s Debt Stock Rises To ₦25.7 trillion

The nation’s debt profile rose from ₦24.95 trillion to ₦25.7 trillion in the last three months. One year ago, it was ₦22.38 trillion.

The development showed that between April and June, the country’s obligations rose by ₦750 billion, and increased by ₦3.32 trillion when compared with the debt figures as of June 30, 2018.

Government has, so far, paid more than ₦800 billion in servicing the multiple obligations, which cut across domestic and foreign deals in the first half of 2019.

Total domestic debts stood at ₦17.38 trillion, with the Federal Government having more than three-quarters of the stockpile. These …
