The conundrum: Do we sustain the lockdown to contain coronavirus and risk the upsurge of insecurity and citizens’ unrest or do we lift the restrictions and find other means of controlling the spread of COVID-19?

For a country like Nigeria with complexities and deplorable socio-economic indices, imposing restrictions on movement for an extended period of time — asphyxiating the economy and pauperising small businesses – is Siberian.

Police, Anambra Journalists In A Showdown Over Lockdown

The Anambra State Police command and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, are currently in a disagreement, after policemen enforcing the lockdown order of the Anambra State government turned down its members who were going to the office on Sunday afternoon.

What Will Happen To Poor If Lockdown Continues – PRP

Party (PRP) has warned the government against pushing the poor to the wall by the indefinite extension of the lockdown order to curb the spread of COVID-19.

President Muhammadu Buhari had declared a lockdown of Lagos and Ogun states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for an initial 14-day period.

Many other states in the country, however, followed suit with restriction-of-movement and stay-at-home orders of their own.

Although the lockdown was expected to last from Monday, March 30 to Monday, April 13, a presidential statement on Saturday said the lockdown would remain in place until otherwise advised by experts.

Lockdown Rules Relaxed For Food Stores In Lagos, Abuja

The Federal Government has relaxed open and close rules for markets, supermarkets and food stores in Lagos, Abuja FCT and Ogun, where a lockdown has been imposed.

They will be allowed to open between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm daily.

The National Co-ordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Aliyu Sani, said this on Wednesday during a briefing by members of the task force.

“For markets, only shops and stalls selling food and groceries shall be allowed to open to customers between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm,” he said.

Italy Extends Lockdown Until ‘At Least’ April 12

Italy on Monday extended an economically crippling lockdown until “at least” mid-April to stem coronavirus infections that have claimed a world-leading 11,591 lives.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said any easing of containment measures would be done incrementally to ensure Italy does not give up gains it has made against the extraordinary disease.
