Slain Ogoni leaders: Dutch court rules against Shell

It was a major victory yesterday for the wives of four slain Ogoni leaders. A Dutch court gave an interim ruling in favour the women who sued oil giant Shell.

The women, Esther Kiobel, Victoria Bera, Blessing Eawo and Charity Levula, sued Shell for its alleged role in the unlawful arrest, detention and execution of their husbands in 1995 by the administration of former military Head of State, the late Gen. Sani Abacha.

Shell, which was extracting oil from Ogoni, had argued that the District Court of The Hague lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit. But the court ruled otherwise.…

Southern, Middle belt leaders back Atiku to challenge poll

The Southern and Middle belt leaders have thrown their weight behind the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar’s resolve to challenge outcome of the 2019 presidential poll.

They also rejected outcome of the poll, saying Jubril (President Muhammadu Buhari) should bear a huge moral burden of the fraud that was perpetrated in the elections.

The former vice president has challenged the re-election Buhari in court.

He met with the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders on Wednesday in Abuja where he expressed confidence in the ability of judiciary in doing the right thing on the matter.

EU not here to select leaders for Nigeria – Envoy

THE Head of the European Union delegation to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West Africa States, Ambassador Ketil Karlsen, has said that the mission of the EU delegation to Nigeria is not to select a leader for the country in the February 16, elections.

He made the comment, weekend in Yenagoa, during a courtesy visit to the Bayelsa State Governor, Hon Seriake Dickson. Karlsen who stressed that the EU did not have any political aspiration in the country noted that the body was only committed to the conduct of free and fair elections in Nigeria.
