South Korean Parliament Closed Over Virus Fears

South Korea’s parliament was shut down on Thursday and a group of lawmakers were in self-quarantine as the country recorded more than 400 new coronavirus infections.

The country endured one of the worst early outbreaks of Covid-19 outside mainland China before bringing it broadly under control with extensive tracing and testing, but is now battling several clusters mostly linked to Protestant churches.

Thursday’s 441 new cases were mostly in the greater Seoul area and are the latest in a series of near-six-month highs after several weeks with numbers generally in the 30s and 40s.

Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, has slammed lawmakers at the House of Representatives for demanding more slots in the Special Works Programme of the Nigerian Government.

With 30 out of 1000 slots per local government to each member of the House, the minority caucus of the lower chamber rejected the slots, saying the sharing process was not transparent.

I Never Made 60 Percent Statement – Akpabio Makes U-Turn

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has made a u-turn, saying that he never said lawmakers got 60 percent of the contracts awarded by the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.

The Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, who announced the receipt of Akpabio’s response, said the minister claimed to have referred to old contracts awarded by the NDDC which had not been paid for and some of which were part of the constituency projects of the lawmakers.

Lawmakers in the United States have condemned President Donald Trump’s decision to pull the country out of the World Health Organisation (WHO) amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“To call Trump’s response to COVID-19 chaotic and incoherent doesn’t do it justice.

“This won’t protect American lives or interests — it leaves Americans sick and America alone,” Senator Robert Menendez, top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said Wednesday on Twitter.

By withdrawing from the WHO, Trump has further abdicated U.S. global leadership, Congressman Ami Bera, who represents California’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, lamented on Twitter.

The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, Thursday said she had directed the House Committee on Judiciary to start drafting articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.
