Expanding The Tax Net In Lagos

All over the world, governments use tax revenues to provide jobs, build dams and roads, operate schools and hospitals, provide medical care and for hundreds of other purposes.  Without taxes to fund its activities, government could not actually exist.

Taxation is used in developed countries as important tool for maintaining the stability of a country’s economy. Payment of tax in turn empowers citizens to demand, not beg, that government fulfills its responsibility. It makes the people more conscious in monitoring government and holding public officers more accountable for their use of public resources.

It is in this wise that Lagos …

Drone Project Aims To Put Floating Lagos Slum On Map

John Eromosele records the coordinates of a bustling canal on his smartphone from aboard a dug-out canoe navigating the floating slum of Makoko in Nigerian megacity Lagos.

The waterway is “like a boulevard, there’s always traffic here,” the computer coding specialist laughed as other boats jostled for space between rows of wooden houses on stilts.

Officially Makoko does not exist.

Its estimated 300,000 inhabitants — no one knows for sure how many — and their ramshackle homes do not appear on any city development plans or maps.

A South Africa-based NGO, Code for Africa, wants to change that.

Smart Move Against Noise In Lagos

The move against noise pollution by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) cannot come too soon and it receives our full approval. If the state is to deserve its appellation as a centre of excellence, if the city of Lagos is to earn its much sought-after tag as a modern megalopolis, if Lagosians are to deserve priding themselves as the most sophisticated of the almost 200 million Nigerians, noise should not be tolerated in the environment. It is against all that is appropriate to a civilised community. From Agege and Ketu, through Yaba to Lekki, officials of the agency
