Johnson’s Brexit Deal Secures First Win In New Parliament

Britain’s new parliament on Friday gave its initial approval to a revised EU divorce deal that sets up a high-stakes clash with Brussels over their future ties.

The 358 to 234 vote paves the way for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to deliver on his winning general election promise to “get Brexit done” by January 31.

But it also pushes Britain and the remaining 27 European Union member states closer to another cliff edge that could end decades of unfettered trade when the post-Brexit transition period shuts at the end of 2020.

Brexit Boost For UK’s Johnson As He Plans For Victory

Prime Minister Boris Johnson won a boost from Brexit supporters on Thursday as he marked one week until election day by setting out a plan for his first 100 days in office.

The Conservative leader appears increasingly confident of victory on December 12 as he remains around 10 points ahead of Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour party in opinion polls.

The electoral threat posed by Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party, meanwhile, receded further with the decision of four of its European Parliament MPs to endorse the prime minister.

Johnson said his “sensible, moderate, tax-cutting” agenda would help reunite Britain after three years of acrimony following the 2016 referendum vote to leave the European Union.

EU President Blasts Boris Johnson Over Referendum Campaign

Boris Johnson told “so many lies” during the EU referendum campaign, the outgoing president of the European commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has said.

In a valedictory interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, Juncker voiced regret he had not countered the claims of the leave campaign in 2016. The commission decided not to get involved on the advice of David Cameron, who feared interventions from Brussels would backfire.

Juncker said that had been a big mistake, adding: “So many lies were told, including by current prime minister, Boris Johnson, that there needed to be a voice to counter them.”

Britain’s Johnson Races Brexit Clock As Deadline Looms

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces two crucial Brexit votes Tuesday that could decide if he still has a reasonable shot at securing his EU divorce by next week’s deadline.

Johnson has set himself a very high bar by promising that he will get Brexit done — “do or die’” — by the twice-delayed October 31 departure date.

The Conservative leader now hopes parliament gives initial support …

Brexit: Boris Johnson In Last Push To Get Deal Through

Boris Johnson will urge MPs to back his Brexit deal in a final bid to get the UK to leave the EU in nine days’ time.

MPs will vote on the PM’s Withdrawal Agreement Bill and if they back it they will be asked to approve a three-day timetable to consider the legislation.

But the decision to curtail the scrutiny of the bill to three days has sparked anger from opposition MPs.

The BBC’s Norman Smith said the PM looks set for a “deeply damaging” defeat over the timetable.
