Gbagbo Sets Sight On 2025 Elections, Pushes For Amnesty

The President of Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara last week lifted the shadow of a jail sentence over his erstwhile bitter political rival Laurent Gbagbo, however, the measure may only go a short way toward lowering the political temperature as the former President now has his eyes fixed on future ambitions.

Africa Daily News, New York recalls that Gbagbo returned home last year following a battle at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague that resulted in his acquittal on war crimes charges. Gbagbo formerly engaged in a brief but brutal presidential battle with Ouattara.

Togo Wades-In To Resolve Mali, Ivory Coast Soldiers Dispute

High-powered delegations from Mali and Ivory Coast met yesterday with Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbe who has now taken the position of mediating a dispute over the arrest of 49 Ivorian soldiers in Bamako.

President Gnassingbe met separately with the delegations in the presidential palace in the capital Lome, the sources said.

Meanwhile, the Togolese presidency did not publish any statement on the meeting as at the time of filing this report.

The togolese president was requested to mediate the conflict by Mali’s military junta in July.

Ivory Coast To Splash $430m In Campaign Against Jihadism

Ivory Coast on Tuesday revealed that it would spend around $430 million in a three-year campaign which would be geared towards supporting young people in border regions at risk from Sahel jihadists.

The Youth Minister of Mamadou Toure who spoke to reporters said; ‘As part of the fight against vulnerability in northern areas, particularly the six regions bordering Burkina Faso and Mali, the government has launched an ambitious programme of integration and infrastructure for education and health’.

Supporters Cheer As Gbagbo Returns To Ivory Coast

The former President of Ivory Coast, Laurent Gbagbo, has returned home after nearly a decade overseas during which was cleared of crimes against humanity.

Africa Daily News, New York gathered that hundreds of cheering supporters greeted Gbagbo at Abidjan airport.

Earlier, police fired tear gas to disperse crowds who had gathered on the main road nearby.

Ivory Coast’s Prime Minister Patrick Achi is reportedly in France for medical treatment after suffering intestinal bleeding, sources close to his office revealed yesterday.

The 65 old Achi has been in France for three days and is set to return home on Friday, the sources told reporters under the condition of anonymity.

Ivorian authorities have released no information on the trip and have not responded to requests by AFP.

Achi, a veteran government figure close to President Alassane Ouattara, is the West African country’s third prime minister in the past year after his two predecessors died.
