Russian Court Declares Instagram, Facebook As ‘Extremist’

A court sitting in Moscow on Monday banned Facebook and Instagram as in the country declaring them as ‘extremist’ organisations, after Russian authorities accused US tech giant Meta of tolerating ‘Russophobia’ over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The Tverskoi district court disclosed that it had agreed to a request from prosecutors for the two huge social media platforms to be banned for ‘carrying out extremist activities’.
They however indicated that Meta’s WhatsApp messenger service would not face the same fate because it is not a public platform.

Instagram Says Will Fight Misinformation With Fact-Checks

Instagram on Monday went global in its fight against misinformation, making alliances with fact-checkers around the world to expose deception in shared photos or videos.

The Facebook-owned social platform launched a fact-checking program in the US early this year.

“Today’s expansion is an important step in our ongoing efforts to fight misinformation on Instagram,” the service said in an online post.

“Photo and video based misinformation is increasingly a challenge across our industry, and something our teams have been focused on addressing.”

Instagram began working with third-party allies in the US to help identify, review and label bogus posts.

Instagram Test Of Hiding ‘Likes’ Spreading To US

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri on Friday said that a test of hiding “likes” at the image and photo-sharing social network will spread to the US.“Heads up! We’ve been testing making likes private on Instagram in a number of countries this year,” Mosseri said in a tweet.

“We’re expanding those tests to include a small portion of people in the US next week.”

Facebook in September confirmed it is dabbling with no longer making a public display of how many “likes” are racked up by posts.
