Netanyahu Says Hostage Release Could Be Days Away

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday evening he hopes to announce the release of all hostages held in Gaza “in the coming days,” as indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas resume in Egypt under a U.S.-backed peace plan. 

Netanyahu made the remark in a brief televised statement, adding that he had dispatched an Israeli delegation to Egypt to “finalize technical details” and aimed to restrict the negotiations to a short timeframe of a few days.

Taliban Release Two Western Hostages In Afghanistan

The Taliban handed two Western hostages over to US forces in southern Afghanistan Tuesday, three years after they were abducted, in a swap for three high-ranking insurgent prisoners that could boost peace talks.

The exchange of American Kevin King and Australian Timothy Weeks for the militants — including Anas Haqqani, brother to the Taliban’s deputy leader — was welcomed by both the United States and the insurgents.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the releases “give us hope for the success of intra-Afghan peace negotiations, which the United States stands ready to support.”

Hostages ‘Killed’ As Rakhine Rebels, Myanmar Army Clash

A number of hostages seized by ethnic Rakhine rebels in a raid on a ferry packed with scores of Myanmar security forces have been killed, the insurgents and army said late Sunday, blaming each other for the deaths.

On Saturday rebels from the Arakan Army (AA), who are fighting for greater autonomy for Rakhine Buddhists from the state, forced a ferry to the shore taking around 50 people hostage including 14 soldiers and 29 police officers.

The army said it deployed attack helicopters in pursuit of the rebels who tried to escape with the detainees loaded onto three boats.
