US Calls On Iran To Release Seized Tankers, Crew

The United States joined Athens yesterday condemned in strong terms, Iran’s seizure of two Greek-flagged oil tankers in Gulf waters while also demanding their immediate release, calling the abductions a ‘threat to maritime security.’

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias agreed in a call ‘that Iran must immediately release the seized vessels, their cargoes, and their crews,’ State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.

‘Iran’s continued harassment of vessels and interference with navigational rights and freedoms are a threat to maritime security and the global economy,’ Price added.

Brazilian investigators said on Friday a Greek-flagged ship carrying Venezuelan crude was the source of oil tarring Brazil’s coastline over the past two months, but the firm running the ship said its voyage finished “uneventfully”.

A federal police document seen by Reuters said the tanker, Bouboulina, owned by Greece’s Delta Tankers Ltd, appears to have spilt the crude about 700km (420 miles) off Brazil’s coast around July 28-29, after loading the oil at Venezuela’s Jose terminal.

Delta Tankers said the Bouboulina had left Venezuela on July 19 bound for Malacca, Malaysia, “where she discharged her entire cargo without any shortage”.
