P&ID: Court Refuses To Grant Adjournment In Trial Of Briton

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday, overruled the British national, James Nolan, on his application for adjournment over inability of his counsel to prepare for his defence.

Justice Abang, who overruled Nolan, ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, to call his first witness.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that EFCC had, on Oct. 21, arraigned Nolan and Adam Quinn (at large), both British nationals, over their alleged complicity in the 9.6 billion dollars judgment against Nigeria.

$750m World Bank Grant

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, will chair the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) committee which will interact with relevant government agencies and prepare modalities for accessing a $750 million World Bank grant. Obaseki who disclosed this on arrival at the Benin Airport after series of meetings in Abuja, said the $750 million grant had been approved, adding that the disbursement would commence soon. He said the World Bank grant to Nigeria’s 36 states would help improve governance, transparency and the development of the physical environment.

Alleged $9.5m FIFA Grant Embezzlement; AGF To Give Verdict

Justice Peter Affen of an Abuja High Court on Tuesday fixed December 16, 2019 for the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) to report on the harmonisation of cases filed against some officials of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) in the alleged misappropriation of $9.5 million grant from the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA).

Two Unilag scholars attract €1,200,000 research grant

Two scholars from the University of Lagos have attracted a total of €1200,000, pounds (N540,000,000 million) for research.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the grants were from the United Kingdom Research and Innovation Global Challenges Research Fund.

The scholars are Dr Sunday Adebisi, Director, African Research Universities Alliance ARUA Centre of Excellence in Unemployment and Skills Development, and Prof. Timothy Nubi, Director, Centre for Urbanisation and Habitable Cities.

Nigeria, others to benefit World Bank $15bn grant

The World Bank has said it will spend 15 billion dollars from 2021 to 2023 to help Nigeria and other African countries strengthen their human capital.

The World Bank Vice President for Africa, Mr Hafez Ghanem, said this at the launch of the bank’s Africa Human Capital Plan during the World Bank-IMF Spring Meetings on Thursday.

Ghanem said that the objective of the plan was to enable Africa’s young people to grow up in optimal health, and be equipped with the right skills to compete in the digitising global economy.
