The rape and murder in Algeria of a 19-year-old woman sparked cries for action on gender-based violence in the North African country and calls to bring back capital punishment.

The body of the young woman, identified as Chaima, was found in early October at a deserted petrol station in Thenia, 80 kilometres (50 miles) east of the capital Algiers.

She had been beaten, raped and burned alive, according to local media.

Violence Against Females Still Common In Nigeria – UNICEF

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has called for a generational movement that will accelerate efforts to end gender-based violence, child marriage and female genital mutilation FGM.

The call comes 25 years after the historic Beijing women’s conference, which tasked countries to engender positive actions that will advance the rights of women and girls.

According to recent research, about 19.9 million girls have experienced FGM in Nigeria.
