The United Nations has called governments at all levels worldwide to respect the rights and protect journalists and media workers in their respective countries.

UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, made the call on Tuesday in his message to commemorate this year’s World Press Freedom Day tagged ‘journalism under digital siege’.

He pointed out the need to shine a spotlight on the essential work of journalists and other media workers who seek transparency and accountability from those in power, often at great personal risk.

A top Chinese university has removed references to “freedom of thought” from its charter, triggering a rare act of student defiance, while two other institutions added language stressing fealty to President Xi Jinping and the Communist Party.

A video circulating this week showed students at Shanghai’s Fudan University singing the school song — which extols “academic independence and freedom of thought” — in an apparent protest.

48 Juvenile Offenders To Regain Freedom In Imo -Governor

The governor of Imo State, Mr. Emeka Ihedioha has promised to set up a committee on prerogative of mercy aimed at setting free at least 48 juvenile offenders in the Imo State Command Correctional Service. 

He disclosed this while declaring open a 3-day reformation, reorientation programmme. The programme is sponsored by the state government through the office of the Senior Special Assistant on Advocacy,  Adaora Onyechere for juvenile offenders in the state with the theme “save them young”.

Chelsea Manning regains freedom

Chelsea Manning is out of jail — for now. The former Army intelligence analyst had been locked up for about two months after refusing to testify to a grand jury about her disclosure of military and diplomatic secrets to WikiLeaks.

Manning was released Thursday from custody in a detention center in Virginia because the grand jury has disbanded. But she could soon return to jail because she received a separate subpoena while she was detained.

Her attorneys say she won’t testify in response to that subpoena either.
