Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Why FG Must Review Welfare

Senator representing Plateau North, Istifanus Gyang has appealed to the Federal Government to use the 2020 Armed Forces Remembrance Day to review the welfare of serving officers and men as well as retirees, “including dead benefits and wellbeing of surviving families”.

 

He also said as the Deputy Chairman Senate Committee on Defence, the Committee will initiate and engage necessary legislative interventions to further equip and empower the Armed Forces “to effectively undertake and deliver on their clearly defined constitutional responsibility”.

The death toll during demonstrations in Iraq surged to more than 300 as security forces were accused of “relentlessly” targeting protesters.

Six more people were killed in the capital Baghdad on Sunday and dozens of others hurt in clashes.

The head of the Iraqi parliament’s human rights commission told Al Jazeera that 319 people have died since October 1 with more than 15,000 wounded. Most of the casualties were anti-government protesters, but security officers also died in the violence.

Iraqi security forces in Baghdad fired tear gas at demonstrators and erected concrete barriers in a bid to block their movement.

Iraqi security forces wrested back control on Saturday of three bridges in the heart of Baghdad that had been partially occupied by anti-government protesters in recent days, AFP correspondents said.
They retook the Al-Sinek, Al-Shuhada and Al-Ahrar bridges over the River Tigris that link the east bank, where the main protest camps are located, with neighbourhoods on the west bank that are home to government offices and foreign embassies.

Amid volleys of tear gas, security forces chased demonstrators back onto Al-Rasheed Street, one of Baghdad’s oldest and most celebrated thoroughfares.

Six Killed In Mali Attack On Pro-Government Forces

Six people were killed late Friday when unknown assailants attacked a post held by armed pro-government groups in strife-torn northeastern Mali, the groups said in a statement.

Four more people were missing after the attack in Aguelhok, an alliance of pro-government forces calling itself Platform of the June 2014 Movements said.

The security situation in Mali has been deteriorating steadily with separatists, salafists and jihadists mounting deadly insurrections since 2012.

No military or political solution appears in sight for Mali, despite the deployment of French, African and UN troops in the country.

Air Force’s helicopter crashes in Katsina

The  Air Force has confirmed the crash of its helicopter that was returning from a combat mission in Katsina State.

It, however, said no life was lost in the crash, which occurred at about 3.30pm yesterday.

NAF spokesman Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola said in a statement that the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has ordered a probe of the incident.

Daramola said: “A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) helicopter has crashed in the process of landing while returning from an anti-armed banditry combat mission in the Northwest Theatre under Operation Hadaran Daji.

BREAKING: Court forces INEC to add Bayelsa units in poll

The Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to include omitted units in supplementary election scheduled on Saturday for Brass Constituency 1.

The court presided over by Justice E. Inyang made the order in a motion ex parte filed by Preye Brodrick and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against INEC.

The court ruled that INEC should conduct supplementary elections in polling units 11-16; units 1-10 and 17 to 21 of Ward 6 in Brass Constituency 1 of the state on March 23 or any other day determined by the defendant (INEC).…
