Somalia Plans New Routes Following Kenya Flight Ban

In its bid to mitigate the impact of Kenya’s decision to suspend flights to and from the country, Somalia has begun the search for alternative routes, its transport minister has revealed.

Duran Ahmed Farah said he had met members of the country’s National Aviation Committee on Thursday to discuss the way forward.

‘We pledge that the government will be working with the business community to ensure that we will do everything we can to ensure that this decision does not affect them,’ said Mr. Farah.

Beijing’s airports cancelled two-thirds of all flights on Wednesday and schools in the Chinese capital were closed again as authorities rushed to contain a new coronavirus outbreak and warned infections may rise.

The city reported 31 new cases while officials urged residents not to leave Beijing, with fears growing about a second wave of infections in China, which had largely brought the contagion under control since its emergence in Wuhan late last year.

Air France Suspends Flights Through Iran, Iraq Over US

Air France on Wednesday announced the suspension of flight through Iranian and Iraqi airspace until further notice.

This is coming after Iran fired ballistic missiles on bases housing US troops in Iraq.

“As a precautionary measure and following news of airstrikes underway, Air France has decided to suspend until further notice all flights through Iranian and Iraqi airspace,” an Air France spokesman said.

US suspends flights to Venezuela indefinitely

The US Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday that it is suspending “all commercial passenger and cargo flights between the United States and Venezuela” indefinitely.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has approved the suspension and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao has implemented it, according to a statement from DHS.

“This determination is based on the ongoing political instability and increased tensions in Venezuela and associated inadvertent risk to flight operations,” the statement said, noting a concern for the safety of passengers, crew and aircraft.
