African filmmaker Mati Diop shines at Cannes Film Festival

Mati Diop, French-Senegalese actress and director, has become the first black female director to win an award in Cannes Film Festival’s  72-year history.

News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that Diop took home the Grand Prix , equivalent of a silver prize, for her film  ‘Atlantics’, a Senegalese drama about sexual politics among young migrants.

The Grand Prix award,  bestowed by the jury of the festival on one of the competing feature films, is the second-most prestigious prize of the festival after the Palme d’Or.

Nigerian filmmaker Ifeanyi Onyeabor dies shooting movie

President of Directors’ Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Mr Fred Amata, has confirmed the death of Nollywood filmmaker, Ifeanyi Onyeabor, who died while shooting a movie in Jos.

Amata told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that Onyeabor’s death on Friday was shocking and unbelievable, and had left him pondering on what may have gone wrong.
