Chinedu Agu—Owerri Lawyer Remanded Over Facebook Posts

Chinedu Agu, a legal practitioner in Imo State, Nigeria,  faces cybercrime charges after criticizing Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration on his Facebook account.

An Owerri-based lawyer and vocal critic of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration, Barrister Chinedu Agu, has been remanded in prison custody over Facebook posts alleged to be inciting and defamatory.

Agu was ordered to the Owerri Correctional Centre on Thursday by Chief Magistrate Obinna Njemanze after being arraigned on a four-count charge. FG Drags Meta, Owners Of Facebook, Whatsapp To Court

The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria has constituted a suit against Meta Platforms Incorporated which is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms and its agent – AT3 Resources Limited – at the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division.

This had also been disclosed in a statement which had been put out by the highest regulatory body for Nigeria’s advertising, ARCON.

A court sitting in Moscow on Monday banned Facebook and Instagram as in the country declaring them as ‘extremist’ organisations, after Russian authorities accused US tech giant Meta of tolerating ‘Russophobia’ over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The Tverskoi district court disclosed that it had agreed to a request from prosecutors for the two huge social media platforms to be banned for ‘carrying out extremist activities’.

The European Court of Justice could on Thursday pause the transfer of private data between the European Union and the United States in a case involving Facebook.

According to reports, the court is to rule in a case initiated by Austrian privacy activist Maximilian Schrems.

He complained to Irish authorities that his Facebook data, which were compiled by Facebook Ireland, were transferred to its U.S. branch without his permission.
