There Is No Plan To Hike Electricity Tariff – Minister

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Egnr. Sale Mamman has debunked claims of a looming major hike in electricity tariff in the country, stressing that there is no plan to ‘significantly’ raise it.

The minister speaking through a statement yesterday made available by his media office noted that instead of a significant hike in electricity tariff, Nigerians should expect an increase in efficiency of the power sector to reduce tariffs, while managing headwinds from foreign exchange and inflation.

This clarification on the heels of reports of possible major increase in the price of electricity.

Proceed from Value Added Tax will be used to subsidise electricity tariff, according to agreement reached between the Federal Government and Labour.

The subsidy could be as much as ₦10.20 per kilowatt hour distributed across bands A, B and C for up to three months, said minister of state for labour and employment Festus Keyamo.

The three months is time for the joint technical committee bridging the talks between labour and federal government to complete its scope of work.

A former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Bode George, has warned against the hike in electricity tariff and pump price of petrol.

Bode George warned that President Muhammadu Buhari should reverse the increment because Nigeria was at the verge of collapse.

He stated that Nigerians were yet to recover from the effect of COVID-19, hence the new tariff and price should be reversed.
