Appeal Court Disposes 805 Cases On 2019 Elections

President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa has revealed that 805 cases that emanated from the 2019 general elections has been successfully disposed off by the appellate court.

Justice Bulkachuwa said the appeals arose from the various petitions filed by aggrieved contestants against the results declared in the general elections.

Speaking at the 2019 annual conference of the Appeal Court justices held in Abuja, yesterday, Justice Bulkachuwa showered encomiums on his colleagues on the Appeal Court bench for their hard work and resilient during adjudications of the election cases.

Hundreds In Algiers Protest Elections Amid Crackdown

Hundreds of people gathered in central Algiers on Friday in what could be a last large-scale attempt to pressure the country’s authorities to cancel the upcoming elections, amid a crackdown by authorities.

Anti-government rallies have been held every Friday and Tuesday since mid-February and the protests forced long-time ruler Abdelaziz Bouteflika to resign in April.

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that there would be no interference in Saturday’s election in Bayelsa and Kogi states.

The European Union Election Observation Mission has knocked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and political parties for their actions in the last general elections.

EU noted there were shortcomings in INEC’s operations while leading political parties were at fault for not controlling their supporters who unleashed violence on electorates.

Defence chief explains military’s role in elections

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin yesterday defended the action taken by the military during the general elections.The Gen.

Olanisakin noted that if such actions were not taken and deployment of the military personnel made, the security situation of the country would have been jeopardised.

Speaking yesterday in Abuja during the orientation programme for senators-elect and House of Representatives members-elect, Gen Olonisakin noted that the deployment of the army during the election was constitutional.

He insisted that the deployment helped in preventing Nigeria from being thrown into war.

Violence and intimidation marr re-run elections in Nigeria

Violence and voter intimidation once again marred polls in Nigeria Saturday, as voters tried to take part in re-run governorship and state elections already postponed once because of unrest.

An opposition spokesman said some of their agents had been killed in the violence and called on election officials to cancel the vote again.

Armed men armed with machetes, knives and cudgels took over polling stations, assaulting observers and journalists in Kano, northwest Nigeria.
