UK Opposition Chief Corbyn ‘Sorry’ For Election Wipeout

Britain’s main opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn apologised Sunday for waging a disastrous campaign that handed Prime Minister Boris Johnson a mandate to take the UK out of the EU next month.

But the veteran socialist defended his radical platform and blamed the media for helping to cause his century-old party’s worst finish since before World War II.

“I will make no bones about it. The election result on Thursday was a body blow for everyone who so desperately needs real change in our country,” Corbyn wrote in the Sunday Mirror newspaper.

“I wanted to unite the country that I love …

Election-Weary Israel To Face Third Vote In A Year

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and rival Benny Gantz prepared Thursday for their third election campaigns in a year, with the country trapped in its worst political crisis in decades.

Israel’s parliament dissolved itself and called March 2 elections in the early hours of Thursday morning, less than three months after an inconclusive general election saw neither Netanyahu nor Gantz able to form a governing coalition.

The September election followed a similarly deadlocked vote in April and opinion polls suggested the third round could again be tight, with neither Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc nor Gantz’s centre-left alliance currently on course for …

Britain Votes In Divisive ‘Brexit Election’

Britain voted on Thursday in a deeply divisive election that posed a historic choice between an imminent split from the European Union or another referendum that could scrap the entire Brexit process.

A decisive victory for Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the third poll in less than five years would almost certainly end Britain’s 46-year involvement in the European project at the end of next month.

The island kingdom would cut ties with its closest trading partners and enter a new era looking to regain the legal controls that Brexit supporters sought in a 2016 vote.

But a win for …

Air Of Menace As Britain’s Election Gets Nasty

Candidates hoping to be elected to parliament in Britain have faced all manner of threats and abuse in a particularly hostile campaign, with some worried for their safety when out canvassing.

When one man on Facebook threatened a violent attack on Dominic Graham, the would-be MP immediately called the police, who made an arrest.

It was far from an isolated case in the run-up to Thursday’s snap polls, called on the increasingly divisive issue of Brexit.

Graham is standing for the third time for the centrist, pro-EU Liberal Democrats, who want to cancel Brexit altogether.

“We didn’t see anything close …

UK PM Avoids Trump Row In Pre-Election Visit

Prime Minister Boris Johnson was braced for trouble from Donald Trump’s visit just days before Britain’s election, but the US president headed home Wednesday having largely kept his promise to stay out of the campaign.

Johnson was forced to deny he was dodging Trump during his visit for a NATO summit, after failing to publicly greet him at Downing Street and holding their face-to-face meeting away from the cameras.

He also sidestepped a question about whether Trump was good for Britain, instead emphasising the strength of transatlantic ties — while avoiding using Trump’s name.

In the end, the unpredictable US …
