UN, AU, ECOWAS Told To Beam Searchlights On Buhari

A human rights lawyer, Barrister Kanmi Ajibola has petitioned the United Nations (UN) over the alleged persistent disobedience to court orders by President MuhammaduBuhari’s government.

Ajibola, a former Chairman of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Ilesa, Osun State branch, in the letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General, urged the international body to put pressure on Buhari to obey court orders and allow full operation of the rule of law.

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed yesterday expressed skepticism over the possibility of the single currency regime of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) taking off next year. According to her, this is because only the Republic of Togo out of other ECOWAS nations has met the set criteria for achieving the target. Border Closure For National, ECOWAS Interest – Omo-Agege

Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege on Friday in Abuja said that the recent closure of Nigeria’s land borders was of national interest and that of ECOWAS member states.
Omo-Agege made this known during a seminar organised by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), a German Foundation with the theme “The roles of Parliaments in Supranational communities”.

Omo-Agege who was represented by Mr Efe Duku, his Special Adviser on Legislative and Plenary Matters, said that the Parliament agreed with the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari on the land border closure.

2016 Agatu Killings: ECOWAS Court orders investigation

The ECOWAS Court of Justice sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday ordered the Federal Government to investigate the 2016 mass killings and destruction of properties in the Agatu Community in Benue State, identify and prosecute the perpetrators and redress the victims.

Delivering judgment in a suit brought by a catholic priest, Reverend Father Solomon Mfa, and eleven others, a three member panel of the Court found the government in ‘violation of their obligation to protect the human rights of the Agatu Community and prevent its violation.’

Central banks in ECOWAS meeting on single currency

Central banks of members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are meeting to take stock of the progress made so far on a single currency for the region by 2020.

The 53rd meeting of the Committee of Governors of Central Banks opened on Thursday in Dakar.

The meeting is organized by the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) and the West African Monetary Agency (AMAO).
