Fresh reports reaching the desk of Africa Daily News, New York have shown that the ECOWAS Court of Justice has decried the poor application of community law by the national courts of member states.

The court stated that this impacts negatively on the growth of the law and the region’s integration project.

“In twenty years of operation, the Court has never been seized of a referral by a national court”, said Vice President Justice Gberi-be Ouatttara.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), on Tuesday, hailed the judgment of the ECOWAS regional Court which dismissed a suit filed by the trustees of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) against the Federal Government.
In a statement by Dr. Umar Gwandu, his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Malami said the judgment has saved Nigeria from payment of billions of naira for bogus claims.
He described the judgment as a clear vindication of the government’s efforts towards respecting human rights and international conventions.

The Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has ordered the Nigeria government to pay ₦53,650,925 to a German, Martin Gegenheimer.
