Nigeria Now Has One Doctor To 10,000 Patients Ratio – NIPSS

The fast-detoriating state of depletion of the health workforce in Nigeria has taken a more drastic turn for the worse with the doctor-to-patient ratio in the country now pegged at 1:10,000 as against the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendation of 1:1,000, according to the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).

No fewer than 6,068 Nigerian medical doctors have moved to the United Kingdom since 2015 when President Muhammadu Buhari, ‘s administration came into being according to a report. 

According to data obtained by Africa Daily News, New York from the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom on Wednesday, the total number of Nigeria-trained doctors who moved over to the UK as of August 30, 2022 stood at 10,096.

No fewer than 727 medical doctors who were trained in Nigeria relocated to the United Kingdom between December 2021 and May 2022 Africa Daily News, New York has gathered.

The figure was contained in data obtained from the website of the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom on the number of foreign doctors working in the UK.

Doctors employed by Kenya’s Nairobi County government resumed work on Thursday following a six-day strike over delayed salaries and a lack of protective equipment when handling patients who may have COVID-19, a union official said.

Following the expiration of its notice, the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commenced a nationwide strike.
