Lagos To Demolish 100 Distressed Buildings

Dr. Idris Salako, Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, says the state government has earmarked 100 distressed buildings for demolition across the state.

It also said the government would the law on demolition of distressed buildings.

The commissioner made this known during a visit to the site of the three-storey building which collapsed in the early hours of Saturday on Freeman St. Lagos Island.

Amidst sporadic shootings, Lagos state government began demolition of the multimillion Ketu – Ikosi Fruit Market in Lagos Friday morning.

Hundreds of wailing market women claimed that they were not informed about the exercise.

The traders were not allowed to pack their goods as the bulldozers commenced the demolition of the market.

Ogun State Seals Off 2 Buildings, Marks 526 For Demolition

The Ogun government on Saturday sealed off two dilapidated buildings in Abeokuta and ordered occupants of the houses to move out within 24 hours.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Urban and Physical Planning, Mr. Nafiu Adebiyi, told newsmen during an inspection tour that 526 other houses built on waterways, canal and erosion channels had been marked for demolition across the state.

Adebiyi said at the scene that the order became necessary to prevent loss of lives and other possible disasters that could arise from the partially collapsed buildings.

The United States on Wednesday blocked an attempt by Kuwait, Indonesia and South Africa to get the United Nations Security Council to condemn Israel’s demolition of Palestinian homes on the outskirts of Jerusalem, diplomats said.

Israel said the 10 apartment buildings demolished on Monday, most of them still under construction, had been built illegally and posed a security risk to Israeli armed forces operating along a barrier that runs through the occupied West Bank.

Court to hear demolition suit against UNILAG on Sept. 30

Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed September 30, for hearing in a suit against the University of Lagos, (UNILAG) and two others, over the alleged wrongful seizure of property and rights’ infringement.

The applicant in the suit before Justice Mohammed Liman, is Mr Emmanuel Ofoegbu, a Lagos-based lawyer.

Joined as respondents are; Dr Yemi Oke, UNILAG, and one Mr Oluwafemi Adetiba.
