Trump To Meet Congress Leaders As Shutdown Deadline Looms

Trump To Meet Congress Leaders As Shutdown Deadline Looms

President Donald Trump is set to meet with Republican and Democratic leaders on Monday as Washington races to avoid a partial government shutdown at midnight Wednesday.

The standoff comes after Senate Democrats earlier this month blocked a Republican-backed stopgap spending bill that would have kept the government funded until November 21. Democrats insist any deal must include measures to expand healthcare coverage, including reversing cuts to Medicaid contained in Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Republicans argue healthcare should be debated separately as part of broader spending negotiations.

With Republicans holding 53 Senate seats, at least 60 votes are required …

Sanders Most Favoured By African-Americans, Floors Trump

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has widened his lead for the Democratic presidential nomination and overtaken Joe Biden in support among African Americans – a voting bloc that until now has largely favoured the former vice president, according to a Reuters/Ipsos national poll released on Tuesday.

Among all registered voters, including Republicans, 47% said they would vote for Sanders in a hypothetical general election matchup, while 40% said they would vote for President Donald Trump. Biden also has a 7-point advantage in support if he were the nominee, and Bloomberg would have a 4-point advantage.

The result of the poll could …

Trump Outpaces Democratic Rivals In Election Fundraising

Donald Trump’s re-election team on Thursday revealed that he sits atop a staggering campaign war chest, underlining the scale of the challenge facing the US president’s Democratic rivals at the start of an election year.

The sprawling Democratic field meanwhile lost another candidate when Julian Castro, the only Hispanic in the 2020 field, announced he was ending his bid.

That leaves 14 candidates still in the running to take on Trump — and competing for much-needed donations that keep a campaign’s all-important ground game and advertising operations going.

In the fourth quarter of 2019, even as Trump was mired in …

Of Democratic Ideals And Ogun 2020 Budget

Last week, the Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, presented a budget estimate of N449.974 billion for the year 2020 to the State House of Assembly. Before going into the details of the budget proposals, however, it is necessary to flag the philosophical background behind it. In presenting the budget, Prince Abiodun apparently took cognizance of the fact that budgeting, a critical aspect of governance and the socio-democratic process, has often been approached from a cavalier perspective in the country. No right-thinking person would doubt the claim that when budgets are not well thought out, faithfully implemented through cash …

Hate Speech, The Broadcast Media And Democratic Freedoms

No doubt there is the need to exercise all possible restraints in the management of information in the broadcast environment.

The radio and television environment in Nigeria which has suddenly become the rallying point for citizens to quickly get information and discuss governance should be a source of concern to any government battling to keep a cohesive, United and secured fragile country like Nigeria.

What manner of necessary media restrictions can be acceptable in a democratic setting?

Should there be a line drawn to make sure that the proposed controls being hatched will not limit the ability of the press …

Elizabeth Warren Becomes New Democratic 2020 Front-Runner

Elizabeth Warren Becomes New Democratic 2020 Front-Runner

Within the first 10 minutes of Tuesday’s fourth presidential debate, you could tell something fundamental had changed in the race: Elizabeth Warren is the new front-runner.

The Massachusetts senator was attacked from all sides from the get-go — on how she planned to fund her “Medicare for All” plan, on the “punitive” nature of her policy solutions, and on her supposed claims to be the only one in the field who had bold ideas.
By our count, at least seven other candidates on the stage attacked Warren at some point during the three-hour debate. That dynamic ensured that the fourth

After Fierce Debate, Key Questions On 2020 Democratic Race

An ascendant Elizabeth Warren seized the spotlight and faced repeated attacks in Tuesday’s Democratic debate as Joe Biden often faded into the background, highlighting a shakeup in the 2020 nomination race.

The three-hour marathon saw Democrats largely unite against a common foil — President Donald Trump, whom many candidates said should be impeached — while expressing sharp disagreements over policy.

Here are four key questions following the debate.

– Is Warren the frontrunner? –
The progressive senator from Massachusetts last week finally drew even with former vice president Biden in polling, and her debate rivals unleashed a barrage of attacks

Peoples Democratic Party reaping the evil she sowed

By MarkAnthony Nze
In as much as I condemn the maladministration of the All Progressives Congress in totality, however it is very pertinent to state here that the Peoples Democratic Party failed woefully in their sixteen years of reign.

It was during the reign of PDP that Nigeria witnessed an unprecedented oil boom yet what they did was never in any way commensurate to  the wealth that accrued to the country at that time.

Admittedly, PDP fared better than APC but we shouldn’t be in a hurry to forget that PDP set the precedence for rigging in Nigeria, and APC
