Bolsonaro’s Gov’t Threatening Democracy In Brazil – Jurists

A group of lawyers and legal experts have sent in a petition to the United Nations, saying that Brazil’s democracy and the independence of its judiciary are under threat from the government of President Jair Bolsonaro.

Africa Daily News, New York reports that this came even as the country prepares for elections in October.

The group of 80 jurists and legal researchers on Wednesday appealed to the UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Diego Garcia-Sayan, to visit Brazil and report on attacks on the Supreme Court and the Superior Electoral Court that oversees elections.

Malian Parliament Approves 5-Year Democratic Transition Plan

Mali’s lawmakers on Monday announced the approval of a plan that would allow the military junta to rule for up to five years, despite regional sanctions earlier imposed on the country over delayed elections.

Africa Daily News, New York recalls that after staging a coup in the impoverished Sahel state  sometime in August 2020, the country’s military rulers initially promised to stage a vote in February 2022.

But in December last year, the junta proposed staying in power for between six months and five years, citing security concerns.

In response, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) last month …

Outrage In Hong Kong As China Pushes Security Law

However, a huge pro-democracy movement has built in the face of fears China has been steadily eroding those freedoms.

The Communist Party made clear Friday the planned law was aimed at quashing the democracy movement.

“We must take powerful measures to lawfully prevent, stop and punish them,” vice chairman of the National People’s Congress’s (NPC) Standing Committee Wang Chen said, referring to “anti-China” forces.

Article 23 of Hong Kong’s mini-constitution, the Basic Law, says the city must enact a law to prohibit “treason, secession, sedition (and) subversion” against the Chinese government.

But the clause has never been implemented due to …

Nigerians Don’t Value Democracy – Sen. Abdullahi

Senator Sabi Abdullahi, the Niger state lawmaker behind the controversial hate speech bill, has stated that renovation of the National Assembly complex which was built in 1999 is long overdue.

Mr. Chairman, please let me add my voice to those of others and thank the organisers of this conference for the kind invitation extended to me to join such a galaxy of scholars. I believe I speak on behalf of my fellow countrymen and women in Nigeria when I say how much we appreciate the University of Oxford through St. Antony’s College for the time and attention you have given to Nigeria since the inception of the African Studies programme here. And of course, a special thanks to my friend and brother, Professor Wale Adebanwi for taking the African Studies …

Corruption And Repression In A Country Practicing Democracy

Are we really practicing democracy in this country? We may borrow an answer to that question from G. K. Chesterton, who wrote: “If we really lived in a democracy, we would not be deciding what to do about the poor. They would be deciding what to do about us.” We would have been able to answer in the affirmative if government at federal, state and local levels were to be at the service of the citizen. But the sad fact is: government has become a crushing burden that the citizen is forced by the same government to bear. This calls

Nothing About Nigeria’s Democracy Is Irreversible -Fayemi

Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, at the weekend warned that there was nothing irreversible about Nigeria’s democracy. Fayemi said the idea of a democratic system should not be tied only to elections, to the detriment of other critical elements of an egalitarian society.

The governor made the assertions at a conference on 20 years of democracy in Nigeria at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, the United Kingdom, where he was a special guest speaker.

He said, “What we established in 1999 is the right to choose our leaders via the ballot. What we must not …

PDP To APC: Your Coup Against Democracy Can’t Stand

The war of words between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) continued wednesday with the opposition party accusing the ruling party of plotting a coup against democracy in Nigeria.

The PDP said it would not allow the coup to stand, in spite of the alleged orchestration of violence, killings and seizure of electoral processes by the APC.

It added that no amount of blackmail, innuendos, threats and direct attacks by the APC would make it to drop its demands for electoral reforms that would return the country to the democratic practice that engenders respect for …

Botswana Begins Voting In Test Of A Stable Democracy

Botswana Begins Voting In Test Of A Stable Democracy

Voting opened on Wednesday in Botswana for a hotly contested general election that could test the country’s traditionally stable politics, as the ruling party faces its toughest challenge yet.

The historic Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) — whose rule has been unfettered since independence from Britain in 1966 — was shaken up earlier this year after former president Ian Khama dramatically renounced his hand-picked successor Mokgweetsi Masisi.

Voters started gathering late on Tuesday at Tlogatloga secondary school in Botswana’s capital Gaborone, waiting all night to cast their ballot.

“I have spotted a candidate I think is the right person and I …

‘Nigeria needs more than Democracy Day to progress’

‘Nigeria needs more than Democracy Day to progress’

President-General, Urhobo Progress Unity (UPU), Olorogun Moses Taiga spoke with SEYE OLUMIDE on declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day and the need to tinker with present system of government.

How do you feel as Nigeria marks June 12 as Democracy Day today 26 years after the annulment and 20 years after returning to civil rule?
It is a welcome development that is well over due. Indeed 26 years ago, Chief MKO Abiola should have taken over as president. So it is better late than never to declare it as Democracy Day. All democrats around the world, particularly Nigeria should …
