Italian sports daily Corriere dello Sport has described the backlash over its controversial “Black Friday” headline as a “lynching”.

The front-page headline accompanied an article about the first Serie A meeting between former Manchester United teammates Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling.

“Who are you calling racist? Lynching of a newspaper that for a century has defended liberty and equality,” read the headline of Friday’s newspaper.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has confirmed that the nation’s economy loses ₦2 billion daily to fuel smuggling.

This comes as the Federal Government said its border closure decision had led to a reduction in the demand for the product, even as prices for rice and frozen foods keep rising due to restricted supplies.

Indeed, the national oil company submitted that it had witnessed a significant drop in Premium Motor Spirit (popularly called petrol) evacuation from the depots since August 22.

Daily, an estimated seven million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), better known as petrol, valued at N1, 085t is smuggled from Nigeria to neighbouring West African countries.

•Suspended CJN rejects tribunal’s chair

The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has ordered that further proceedings in the trial of the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen be conducted on a day-to-day basis.

Tribunal Chairman Danladi Umar, in a bench ruling yesterday also elected to reserve, till the conclusion of the trial, decisions on applications by Justice Onnoghen, which  challenged the tribunal’s jurisdiction and another asking Umar to recuse himself from the case.

Umar cited Section 296(2)&(3) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) his support to position he took.
