Truck Driver Remanded At UK Court Over 39 Dead Migrants

Maurice Robinson, a 25-year-old from Northern Ireland known as Mo, was charged Saturday with 39 counts of manslaughter, money laundering and conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration.

As bereaved families in Vietnam prayed for their missing sons and daughters, some of whose identities emerged online, Robinson made no statement in a brief video appearance at a court in Chelmsford, northeast of London.

He has been scheduled to enter a plea at London’s Old Bailey court on November 25.

The Supreme Court has upheld the victory of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, in the 2019 gubernatorial election.

The Apex Court, in a judgment delivered by a panel of three Justices, upheld Wike’s appeal against the decision of the Court of Appeal which reinstated the petition of the candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Biokpomabo Awara.

The Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal had earlier in October dismissed the petition of AAC candidate, Awara, declaring Wike winner of the poll, which was later challenged by the AAC candidate at the Court of Appeal.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended four Justices of the Court of Appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari for appointment as justices of the apex court.

They include Justice Adamu Jauro, from the North-east zone; Justice Emmanuel A. Agim, South-south zone; Justice C. Oseji, South-south zone and Justice Helen M. Ogunwumiju from the South-west zone.

Also recommended for appointment as substantive Chief Judge of the Federal High Court is Justice John Tsoho, who has been on acting capacity since July this year.

Tanzania Court Upholds Ruling To Ban Child Marriage

A Tanzanian court has upheld a ruling banning the marriage of girls under the age of 18 and won praise from rights activists.

The High Court in 2016 ruled that laws allowing girls as young as 15 to be married with the permission of their parents, or even 14 with the permission of a court, were unconstitutional and discriminatory.

However, the state had appealed.

“We reject this appeal as it has no foundation,” the appeals court judges wrote in their ruling on Wednesday, giving the government one year to amend the law.
