UK Lawmaker Blames HSBC Over Corruption In S. Africa

British lawmaker Peter Hain said corruption under South Africa’s former president Jacob Zuma was enabled by international banks, companies, and governments which should now seek to recover the loot they helped to launder.

Hain made this known on Monday in his submission to the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture.

HSBC, Standard Chartered, and India’s Bank of Baroda, as well as their senior directors, were “directly culpable” in the looting of South Africa’s treasury under Zuma.

AGF Unveils New Guidelines For Anti-corruption Strategy

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami, (SAN) has unveiled new guidelines for the implementation of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy 2017-2021.

The new guidelines which came into effect on October 24, 2019 stated that all ministries, departments or agencies and committees seeking to conduct, organize or host programs on the fight against corruption must seek and obtain clearance of the justice minister.
Similarly, all ministries, departments and agencies and committees must seek and obtain clearance of the minister on donor assisted project.

South Africa’s Ex-Leader Zuma To Face Corruption Charges

South Africa’s scandal-plagued former president Jacob Zuma will face a corruption trial, a court ruled on Friday, dismissing his application for a permanent stay of prosecution.

Zuma, who is accused of taking bribes from French defence company Thales in the 1990s, sought to have the case permanently dropped in March this year on the grounds that it was politically motivated.

But the trial is expected to begin on Tuesday after High Court judge Willie Seriti ruled that Zuma’s “application for the permanent stay is dismissed with costs”.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Tanko Muhammad, has declared that he has zero-tolerance for corruption and expressed the readiness of the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate and sanction judges across the country, who indulge in acts that are incongruent with judicial norms.

Corruption breeds terrorism, says INTERPOL scribe

The Secretary-General of INTERPOL, Jurgen Stock on Monday met with the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu to explore partnership on how to fight corruption.

Stock said since corruption breeds terrorism, the anti-graft war must be sustained.  

He commended the zeal and concerted efforts of the  EFCC in ridding Nigeria of all forms of economic crime, and stressed that partnership between INTERPOL.
