Pope Steps Up Call For Poor Country Debt Cancellation

Pope Francis renewed a call on Tuesday for the cancellation of debt owed by poor countries in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, saying it was time for restorative justice.

The pope is preparing for an audience with the public on Wednesday, his first since the pandemic hit Italy nearly six months ago.

“I repeat my call for the cancellation of the debt of the most vulnerable countries, in recognition of the severe impact of the medical, social and economic crises they face as a result of Covid-19,” the Roman Catholic Church’s highest official said.

“We also need to ensure …

Pope Calls For Social Justice And Vaccines For All

The coronavirus pandemic is exacerbating inequalities between rich and poor, Pope Francis said on Wednesday, calling for universal vaccines not reserved just for the wealthiest.

As the virus continues to claim lives and wreak havoc on economies around the world, the Pope in recent months has tried to use all his moral force to demand a new post-pandemic society, more respectful of the poor and the environment.

The call for social justice is a familiar theme sounded by the leader of the 1.3 billion Catholics around the world, who witnessed poverty and a crippling economic crisis first hand at home …

Japanese Economy Shrinks By 27.8 Percent

The Japanese economy contracted at an annualised rate of 27.8 per cent in the second quarter, as the world’s third-largest economy was devastated by the novel coronavirus pandemic, a government report showed on Monday.

The third straight quarterly contraction marked the biggest fall since 1980, when comparable data became available.

The reading was almost in line with the 26.6 per cent contraction forecast by the Japan Centre for Economic Research.

The centre expected the economy to bounce back in the July-to-September period with annualised growth of 13.6 per cent.

COVID-19: UK Goes Into Recession First Time In 11 Years

The United Kingdom, UK, has officially fallen into recession for the first time in 11 years due to the huge impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

A report from the Office for National Statistics stated that the country’s gross domestic product, GDP, is estimated to have fallen by a record 20.4% between April and June 2020, making it the second consecutive quarterly decline after it fell by 2.2% between January to March 2020.

According to the report, the collapse in output was driven by the closure of shops, hotels, restaurants, schools, and car repair shops due to the coronavirus pandemic.

70 Countries Are Running Out Of HIV Drugs

More than 70 countries warned they are at risk of running out of HIV medication due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a survey conducted by the World Health Organisation.

Twenty-four countries said they have a “critically low” stock of antiretroviral medicine, or ARVs, largely used as a therapy to treat HIV, or have seen a disruption in their supply chain as a result of the pandemic, the WHO said.

U.S. Lawmakers Blast Donald Trump Over WHO

Lawmakers in the United States have condemned President Donald Trump’s decision to pull the country out of the World Health Organisation (WHO) amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“To call Trump’s response to COVID-19 chaotic and incoherent doesn’t do it justice.

“This won’t protect American lives or interests — it leaves Americans sick and America alone,” Senator Robert Menendez, top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said Wednesday on Twitter.

By withdrawing from the WHO, Trump has further abdicated U.S. global leadership, Congressman Ami Bera, who represents California’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, lamented on Twitter.

U.S. Posts New World Record COVID-19 Cases In Single Day

The U.S. posted another single day record smashing 57,236 COVID-19 cases on Thursday, as infections rose in 37 states.

The new record was the latest proof that the coronavirus pandemic, once thought to be waning, was again spreading rapidly in the world’s biggest economy.

On Wednesday, the U.S. had posted 51,097 cases.

There are fears that it can post single day 100,000 cases.

The U.S. now has 2,837,189 cases of the virus, with the record death toll of 131,485.

More than three dozen U.S. states saw a rise in COVID-19 cases on Thursday,

Brazil resumes publishing virus toll, criticizes WHO

Brazil Resumes Publishing Virus Toll, Criticises WHO

Brazil’s government resumed publishing the country’s total death toll from the coronavirus pandemic Tuesday, after facing accusations of trying to hide the magnitude of its raging health crisis.

Far-right President Jair Bolsonaro’s government had stopped publishing the total number of deaths from the new coronavirus Friday, saying it was adopting a new methodology and would only report the number of deaths recorded in the past 24 hours in its daily bulletin.

That drew accusations of foul play from a long list of high-profile critics, as well as a ruling from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Monday that the …

Sweden didn't lock down, but economy to plunge anyway

Sweden Didn’t Lock Down, But Economy To Plunge Anyway

Unlike most countries, Sweden never locked down during the coronavirus pandemic, largely keeping businesses operating, but the economy appears to be taking a hard hit nonetheless.

Under the Scandinavian country’s controversial approach to the virus, cafes, bars, restaurants and most businesses remained open, as did schools for under-16s, with people urged to follow social distancing and hygiene guidelines.

Whatever hope there may have been that this policy would soften the economic blow now seems dashed.

“As in most of the world, there will be a record decline for the Swedish economy in Q2,” SEB bank economist Olle Holmgren said.…

US Faces Unemployment Crisis Amid Record Trade Drop

In further signs of the crisis facing the world’s largest economy amid the coronavirus pandemic, new data Thursday showed US a record plunge in US exports as layoffs exceeded 42 million.

The two key reports on economic health indicate that even as Wall Street regains its strength and some industries show signs of recovery as virus lockdowns ease, the United States is not out of the woods yet.

The Labor Department said 1.87 million workers filed new jobless claims last week, 249,000 less than the week prior but still a grievous figure nearly three times higher than the weekly record …

The Return Of La Liga: What’s At Stake?

La Liga resumes on June 11 after a three-month absence due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have been unable to pull away from each other at the top of the table while Atletico Madrid are involved in what looks like a four-way fight for Champions League qualification.

AFP Sport takes a look at some key issues ahead of the run-in.

Turbulent title race

When Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 1, it seemed they had halted a dip in form and seized control of the title race.

But a week later, they
