Merkel Urges Better EU Coordination On Virus Travel Rules

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed her desire for better coordination on pandemic travel rules among the bloc’s 27 member states.

With the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus, which has become more rapid, Merkel have insisted it was problematic to have a patchwork of regulations.

I regret that we haven’t managed yet to have completely uniform action among the member states on travel guidelines β€” that is coming back to haunt us,’ she told reporters after a meeting with European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.

UK Travellers To Face Shorter Quarantine Periods In Italy

Italy has announced that it will allow passengers from the United Kingdom, Austria, and Israel to undergo a shorter, five-day quarantine on entering the country under new regulations which is expected to take effect today (Tuesday).

From April 7-30, these travelers can forgo a two-week quarantine to enter Italy.

The three countries have been included in a list of over 30 countries, most in the European Union, in which the mandatory quarantine is shortened to five days from 14.

The new rules comes even as Italy continues to monitor the progress of vaccination campaigns in Israel and Britain.
