Donald Trump Vetoes Congress On War Powers

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday vetoed an ‘insulting’ resolution that directs him to terminate armed hostilities against Iran, not “explicitly authorised” by Congress.

A handful of Republicans in both chambers supported the rebuke after Mr. Trump took out a top Iranian general in January.

“This was a very insulting resolution, introduced by Democrats as part of a strategy to win an election on November 3 by dividing the Republican Party.

“The few Republicans who voted for it played right into their hands,” Trump said in a statement.

Trump said the measure was misguided because the U.S. is not at …

US Congress Approves Russia-Europe Gas Pipeline Sanctions

The US Senate voted Tuesday to slap sanctions on companies working on Russia’s Nord Stream pipeline, sending a bill to President Donald Trump that is sure to antagonize European nations counting on the project’s natural gas.

The measure, inserted into a huge annual defense spending bill, passed 86 to eight after easily clearing the House of Representatives last week.

It aims to halt further construction of the $10.6 billion pipeline being built under the Baltic Sea and is set to double shipments of Russian natural gas to Germany.

The German-Russian Chamber of Commerce said last week the pipeline was important …

US Congress Recognizes Armenian Genocide

The US Congress on Thursday formally recognized the 1915-1917 murder of up to 1.5 million Armenians as genocide.

The Senate’s passage of the repeatedly stalled resolution is expected to anger Turkey, which denies there was a genocidal mass murder, insisting the Armenians died as a result of World War I.

In passing the resolution, the United States joined 30 other countries recognizing Armenia’s claim of genocide, which took place in the final years of the Ottoman empire that was centered in Istanbul.

“It is fitting and appropriate that the Senate stands on the right side of history,” said Senator …

Trump sues banks to stop Congress probing his accounts

US President Donald Trump, along with his family and businesses, on Monday sued Deutsche Bank and Capital One in an attempt to stop them from complying with Congressional subpoenas issued as part of a probe into foreign political influence.

The subpoenas — which the Trumps described in their suit as “intrusive and overboard” — were issued to several banks by the Democratic-majority House’s intelligence and financial services committees, which are looking into the president’s finances as part of a larger probe into election meddling by Russia.

The lawsuit is the latest step in Trump’s fightback against the Democrats, and alleges …

Trump’s move to build wall without Congress

  • President Trump is expected to sign that compromise border security bill this morning in the Rose Garden. Then, he’ll declare a national emergency on the border with Mexico and use executive action to cobble together $8 billion to build a border wall, White House officials say.
  • So, as one crisis is averted (no partial government shutdown), another one begins. Democrats and some Republicans say this would be an unprecedented use of presidential power, and this constitutional dispute will likely get tied up in the courts. (Fun fact: Way back in 2014, Donald Trump said President Obama’s executive action on immigration
