GHANA is moving fast at scaling up its cocoa value chain and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Tuesday presented what he described as ‘Ghana Chocolate’ to more than 2000 delegates at the African Investment Forum (AIF) holding in South Africa’s city centre in Johannesburg.
He said that other African producers of cocoa, especially Nigeria and ivory Coast, could enjoy cocoa boom and enhanced value chain.

Nigeria Will Team Up With Cameroon To Set Cocoa Price

Nigeria is planning to team up with Cameroon to agree on a premium for their cocoa with international buyers, following moves by the top producers – Ivory Coast and Ghana, to boost prices for their crops, the Vice President of the World Cocoa Producers Organisation, Sayina Riman, has said.

The plan, which was said to have been suggested by Nigeria, the world’s fourth-largest cocoa producer, is part of a drive-by cocoa growers in West Africa and Latin America to try to address a perceived imbalance between farmers’ incomes and money made by big commodities traders.

Fair Trade USA raises cocoa price minimums

Fair Trade USA will increase the floor price and fixed premium it requires companies to pay cocoa farmers under its certification system, the organization said on Tuesday.

The increase is designed to improve livelihoods in a sector that has long grappled with farmer poverty, child labor and deforestation

The nonprofit will increase its minimum price for conventional cocoa to $2,400 per tonne from $2,000. For organic cocoa, the price will be $300 over this minimum or the market price, whichever is higher at the time.
