Buhari Speaks On Closure Of Nigeria’s Borders

President Muhammadu Buhari, Saturday, in London said that the partial closure of Nigeria’s borders was not to punish her neighbours.

He explained that it was meant to strengthen the country’s security and economy.

Border Closure: Customs Seize 42 Bags Of Foreign Rice

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says it has intercepted 42 bags of foreign rice at Kankara axis of Katsina State.

The Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Mr Sunday James, who disclosed this in a statement made available to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Saturday in Abuja, said that it was concealed in a vehicle.

James said that the officers were on routine patrol along the Kankara axis when they apprehended a vehicle carrying the contraband.

Border Closure: Nigeria Customs Reveals Target

Mohammed Garba, the newly appointed Coordinator for the Joint Border Operations Drill, North central Zone, Ilorin, Kwara State, says Federal Government policy on border closure was targeted at illegal businesses.

NAN reports that he spoke at the palace of the Emir of Yashikira, the Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara on Sunday when he led his team on familiarisation tour of border communities in the state.

Border Closure: Nigerian Govt Speaks On Date Of Reopening

Nigeria’s government has said there is no fixed date for the reopening of the country’s land borders, which were closed in August this year.

President Muhammadu Buhari had explained that the borders were closed, to prevent smuggling of banned items.

Speaking with journalists on Monday, the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mariam Katagum, stated that a date for the borders to be reopened would be fixed after a joint patrol team set up by Nigeria and its neighbours submit its recommendations.

NLC Speaks On Effect Of Border Closure In Nigeria

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Bayelsa on Thursday applauded the Federal Government for the border closure, saying the policy was yielding positive results in various local products, especially rice.

The Federal government delegation is presently in a closed-door meeting with Customs officers on the Nigeria- Niger Republic border post at Magama Jinia, Katsina State.

The Federal Government on Monday said seizures made by security agents at the country’s land borders indicated that the republics of Benin and Niger were not addressing issues that led to the border closure.
