Despite China’s Warning, US Lawmakers Meet Taiwan President

Members of the United States congress met Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and other lawmakers on Monday despite the warnings from China. 

Africa Daily News, New York reports that their trip to the island nation is coming on the backdrop of China’s warning against visits by foreign government officials described as ‘external forces’.

The five-member delegation arrived on Sunday, less than two weeks after the visit of U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The team of Republicans and Democrats comprises Senator Ed Markey and Representatives John Garamendi, Alan Lowenthal, Don Beyer, and Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen.

Taiwan’s army conducted another live-fire practise yesterday after Beijing called off its largest-ever military drills around the island and its repeated threats to seize control of the self-ruled democracy. 

Beijing has expressed anger at US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s travel to Taiwan last week. Pelosi was the highest-ranking elected American official to visit Taiwan in decades. Days of air and sea drills were held as a result, escalating tensions to their highest level in years.

No fewer than two dozen crew members have been declared missing after their ship broke into two during a typhoon in the South China Sea on Saturday, with rescuers scrambling to find them, officials have said.
