American Children Show Symptoms, Test Positive For Virus

Children in the United States are showing symptoms of coronavirus and some already tested positive.

In New York, more than a dozen children have been hospitalised with mysterious syndrome associated with the disease.

Mayor Bill de Blasio made the announcement on Tuesday in an urgent alert for parents and doctors.

De Blasio disclosed that four of the children tested positive for COVID-19, while six had antibodies, suggesting they had been infected with the virus.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says no fewer than 250,000 children in Nigeria die on their first day of life, describing the current indices for child health in the country as “alarming.”

Mr. Maulid Warfa, the UNICEF Chief of Field Office, Kano, made the remark in a goodwill message at the opening ceremony of the 51st Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of Paediatric Association of Nigeria (PAN) in Kano on Wednesday.

A 60-year-old Cherubim and Seraphim pastor based in Birmingham, in the United Kingdom, identified as Michael Oluronbi was on Tuesday, January 14th, convicted by a UK court for 24 counts of child sexual abuse and rape.

He was found guilty of 15 counts of rape, seven counts of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault

UNICEF To Improve Literacy Of Nigerian Children

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), on Friday said it would help improve literacy level among Nigerian children in rural areas through sensitisation and advocacy.

The UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Mr Peter Hawkins, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the importance of literacy and education would be better understood through advocacy.

Hawkins said that for those in the rural areas to understand that they could be liberated from poverty through education, it had to be through advocacy and sensitisation.

Lagos Orders Release Of 11 Children From Prison Custody

Lagos State commissioner for justice and attorney-general, Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, has ordered the release of 11 children held in prison custody in the state.
Onigbanjo in a statement by the ministry’s spokesman Kayode Oyekanmi said the children’s imprisonment was contrary to the provision of Section 207 of the Lagos State Child Rights Law of 2015.

Oyekanmi disclosed that Onigbanjo got aware of the children’s ordeal after a “tip-off received from concerned members of the public on certain Correctional Centres in the state having minors in their custody.”

Nine Children Killed In Afghanistan Landmine Blast

Nine children were killed when a planted roadside bomb exploded as they walked to school in a northeastern province of Afghanistan, government and police officials said.

The blast happened in Darqad district of Takhar province on Saturday, when the children, aged between eight and 11, stepped on the bomb planted on a road in a Taliban-controlled village.

“In the morning on roadside, nine children were killed in a landmine blast placed by the Taliban. Three children, who were part of the group, are missing,” Jawad Hejri, a spokesman for the Takhar provincial governor, told Al Jazeera.

An extremely hot porridge being transported in a tricycle in Bauchi has claimed the lives of three children, aged between nine months and nine years.
