British PM Target Election As EU Mulls Brexit Extension

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson could pivot towards a general election as the EU mulls granting a Brexit deadline extension on Wednesday, after a fresh twist to the divorce saga cast doubt over his hopes of leaving on October 31.

Intense parliamentary votes on Tuesday, Johnson won initial backing for the divorce deal he agreed with the EU — but MPs then rejected his timetable to rush it through parliament in a matter of days.

Following that setback, Johnson said he would halt the ratification process while European Union leaders consult on a delay — which MPs had forced him …

Brexit In The Balance As British MPs Hold Knife-Edge Vote

British MPs gathered on Saturday for a knife-edge vote on Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal for a decision that could see the UK leave the EU this month or plunge the country into fresh uncertainty.

The parliament was holding its first Saturday sitting since the 1982 Falklands War to debate the terms of a divorce agreement Johnson struck with European Union leaders Thursday.

Opposition parties and Johnson’s own Northern Irish allies have rejected the text but the prime minister and his team have spent the past 48 hours frantically trying to win the support of wavering MPs.

British Pound Resumes Drop At Start Of Key Brexit Week

The British pound slid against the euro and dollar Monday, the start of a pivotal week for Britain and the European Union to strike a Brexit deal.

European stock markets also retreated as weak Chinese data offset a partial trade deal between China and the United States, analysts said.

Asian investors had earlier Monday saluted the trade deal, sending regional equity markets rallying, though observers were skeptical about the overall significance of the agreement.

Official data meanwhile showed Chinese imports and exports fell more than forecast in September, as US tariffs and cooling demand at home and abroad hit trade …

British PM vows to pursue Brexit deal after new blow

Beleaguered British Prime Minister Boris Johnson vowed to continue his attempts to strike a new Brexit deal with Brussels, after losing yet another vote on Tuesday during a chaotic parliamentary session.

Johnson slammed the opposition for voting against his call for a snap election in the final minutes of a stormy late-night debate ahead of a controversial suspension of parliament called by the prime minister.

He said he would “strive to get an agreement” at a summit in Brussels next month — the alternative being a “no-deal” departure that critics warn would spark economic chaos.

How Nigeria was sold to the British for £865,000 in 1899

All through the 19th century, palm oil was highly sought-after by the British, for use as an industrial lubricant for machinery. Remember that Britain was the world’s first industrialised nation, so they needed resources such as palm oil to maintain that.

Palm oil, of course, is a tropical plant, which is native to the Niger Delta. Malaysia’s dominance came a century later. By 1870, palm oil had replaced slaves as the main export of the Niger Delta, the area which was once known as the Slave Coast. At first, most of the trade in the oil palm was uncoordinated, with …
